Padres aiming for 6th straight win as they face Nationals The San Diego Padres go for their sixth straight win when they close out a three-game series against the Washington Nationals on Sunday. After losing games started by Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg, Washington will send right-hander Jeremy Hellickson (2-0, 4.34 ERA) out against left-hander Joey Lucchesi (3-2, 4.33) in Sunday's finale.Hellickson, 32, is coming off his first subpar outing of the season in a loss to the Rockies on April 22. He allowed five runs on nine hits in five innings after allowing just two runs over his first two starts. Hellickson was unable to hold an early lead in his first career start at Coors Field."You get a three-run lead, it doesn't matter who you're facing or where you're at, you can't give up three runs there," Hellickson told the Washington Post. "It doesn't matter where you're playing." Lucchesi had lost two straight starts before getting back on track last time out when he allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings of a Padres win over the Reds. He struck out eight and walked two. Lucchesi had given up 12 runs over 11 innings in his past two starts."My mindset was the right spot," Lucchesi told the San Diego Union Tribune. "I told myself I was going to attack the zone, get in there, throw through (catcher Austin Hedges) with my fastball and my fastball command was there. I've been working on that in my last pen. Coming into this game, I knew I was struggling with first-pitch strikes. I did a little bit better with it today." Washington's bullpen was the culprit yet again on Saturday as Strasburg left with nothing to show for seven innings of two-run baseball.Manuel Margot's bases-loaded single keyed a six-run 10th inning as the Padres beat the Nationals 8-3 on Saturday.Ty France singled off Wander Suero (1-3) to open the 10th and later scored on a sacrifice fly. After Fernando Tatis and Wil Myers walked to load the bases, Justin Miller hit Manny Machado, forcing in the fourth San Diego run and Margot lined a two-run single to left to make it 6-2.Hunter Renfroe added a sacrifice fly and a second run scored on Victor Robles' throwing error.Luis Perdomo (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the win.Renfroe had two hits, including a two-run homer, for the Padres.Juan Soto and Howie Kendrick homered for Washington, which has lost three of four. For the season, the Nationals bullpen's 7.34 ERA is last among the major league's 30 teams."We got a problem in our bullpen, and we got to fix it," Nationals manager Dave Martinez told the Post. "It's going to take more than two or three guys in that bullpen to step up. It really is." The Padres bullpen, which turned in 4 1/3 scoreless innings on Saturday, ranks eighth with a 3.81 ERA."There is just a confidence in our team," Eric Hosmer told the Union Tribune. "When it's a close game ... it gives you the confidence to think, 'All we need is one right here.' On the other side, you don't know if all you need is one. That's a real feeling." Hellickson is 3-4 with a 5.40 ERA in 10 career starts against the Padres, while Lucchesi had a no decision after allowing one run in five innings of his only previous start against the Nationals.--Field Level Media
