D-backs' Corbin looks for another quality start against Giants 45m ago• 3 min read PHOENIX -- Early in 2013, Chipper Jones alerted hitters to Arizona left-hander Patrick Corbin."This Corbin dude is pretty nasty," Jones wrote in a tweet as Corbin pitched his way to an All-Star berth. Can we get a retweet? That Corbin dude appears to be back.Tommy John surgery in the spring of 2014 forced Corbin into a detour that lasted into the middle of the 2015 season, but he has hit a stride reminiscent of the old days in his most recent appearances.Corbin is 3-1 with a 1.23 ERA in his last four starts, all quality starts. He has 31 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings while limited opposing hitters to a .189 batting average in that stretch.Corbin (11-11, 4.09) will attempt to extend that streak when the Diamondbacks go for a three-game sweep against San Francisco on Sunday afternoon at Chase Field. Right-hander Chris Stratton (2-2, 3.98) is to make his fifth major league start for the Giants."It's fastball command on both sides of the plate, the fearlessness to attack hitters early in counts with an assortment of pitches," Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said of Corbin's recent success."There is a swing-and-miss breaking ball that's strike-to-ball, and then there's a strike-to-strike breaking ball that he can throw really at any time. He is a very confident pitcher. He's throwing all pitches with conviction. If you have that combination, it is very powerful. We're watching a guy work deep into games against some very offensive teams. Fairly routine for the past few starts. It's been an impressive run for him and he deserves all that credit." Corbin struck out eight in 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the Cubs on Aug. 12 and was within one out of his first career shutout and first post-surgery complete game before being removed in the ninth inning of a 4-0 victory at Houston on Aug. 17. His last time out, Corbin gave up one run in four innings of a 7-4 victory at the Mets on Tuesday."You're not an All-Star if you are not doing things right and the rest of the league is complimenting you and voting you in as an All-Star," Lovullo said, looking back to the 2013 season."So that's in there. We know that's in there. He's on a great run." If the D-backs need a closer, No. 1 option Fernando Rodney might not be available. Rodney has saved all five of the D-backs' victories in the last six days as they remained 1 1/2 games ahead of Colorado in the NL wild-card race."Remarkable," manager Torey Lovullo said.Corbin is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in two starts against the Giants this season, the first in the second game of the season and the other on Aug. 6, the game that started his recent run. He gave up three earned runs and struck out a season-high 10 in six innings in a 6-3 loss at AT&T Park that night. He is 4-7 with a 3.57 ERA against the Giants in 18 appearances, 16 starts. He has more victories only against fellow NL opponents Colorado and San Diego.Arizona has three homers in the first two games of the series -- a three-run shot by Paul Goldschmidt providing the margin in a 4-3 victory Friday and bases-empty homers by A. J. Pollock and J. D. Martinez giving the D-backs all they needed in a 2-1 victory Saturday.Stratton is 2-1 with a 2.51 ERA four in made his second career start against the Diamondbacks on Aug. 5, his only career appearance against Arizona. He gave up five hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out four in five innings. He did not receive a decision in the Giants' 5-4 victory. Stratton is 1-1 with a 2.76 ERA in three road appearances, two starts, this season.
