Padres trying to avoid home sweep at hands of GiantsFLMWednesday could be a watershed night in the San Diego Padres' 2019 season. The Padres complete a three-game series against the visiting San Francisco Giants at Petco Park, and need a win to avoid being swept. If they lose, the Padres will fall two games below .500 with four games remaining before the All-Star break. Those four games? Against the Dodgers, the runaway leaders of the National League West, and the game will be in Los Angeles ... where the Dodgers are 35-9.The Padres, who are a disappointing 23-23 at home this season, could be at a crossroads after consecutive lopsided losses to the Giants by scores of 13-2 and 10-4."We've been a streaky team in the first half of the season," Padres manager Andy Green said recently. "But we've also been resilient. We've responded well when we've lost a couple." Wednesday would be a perfect time for the Padres to start playing well. They have lost three in a row.But breaking the streak might be tough in a match of rookie right-handers -- the Padres' Cal Quantrill (2-2, 4.66 ERA) opposing the Giants' Shaun Anderson (3-2, 3.86).It was only 10 days ago that Green announced Quantrill was moving from the rotation to the bullpen. Now, after four appearances out of the bullpen, the Padres' first-round pick in the 2016 draft is back in the rotation -- although this is likely a spot start.Quantrill, who will be facing the Giants for the first time, will be making his 11th major league appearance and seventh start. He has a 1.36 WHIP and a .268 opponents' batting average -- allowing 19 runs on 38 hits and 12 walks with 32 strikeouts in 36 2/3 innings.Quantrill's ERA as a starter is 5.23. In his most recent start on June 14, he allowed four runs on six hits in five innings. In 5 2/3 innings over his four relief appearances, he gave up one run on four hits and four walks with five strikeouts. He'll be facing a Giants team that that has posted three straight wins while scoring in double digits in each game."When you're hitting like we're hitting right now, you're going to win games," Giants manager Bruce Bochy told reporters.Anderson, who made his major league debut on May 15, will be making his 10th big league start while facing the Padres for the second time.He earned the win on June 12, holding San Diego to two runs on four hits and three walks with six strikeouts over six innings in the Giants' 4-2 win.Anderson also won his most recent start on June 28, holding Arizona to two runs on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings in a 6-3 Giants win.Anderson has a .266 opponents' batting average with a 1.34 WHIP. He has allowed 25 runs (22 earned) on 53 hits with 16 walks and 29 strikeouts in 51 1/3 innings. The Giants are 5-2 against the Padres since losing three of the season's first four games in San Diego.--Field Level Media
