D-backs looking to sweep Rockies heading into breakFLMArizona rookie left-hander Alex Young will make his home debut Sunday when the Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies wrap up a three-game series in Phoenix.Young (1-0, 1.23 ERA) picked up the win in his major league debut in San Francisco against the Giants on June 27, when he allowed one run on three hits in five innings as a starter."He was composed early in the game from the first batter," manager Torey Lovullo said after that game. "Those are the things that stand out." Young made a relief appearance in Los Angeles against the Dodgers on July 2, throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings. The 25-year-old was in position for a victory before the Diamondbacks' bullpen gave up two runs in the ninth for a 5-4 loss.He is taking the rotation spot of Taylor Clarke, who was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday (back inflammation). Arizona is also missing starters Luke Weaver and rookie Jon Duplantier due to injury.Arizona has won the first two games of the series, which has brought both teams to .500 as they battle for a wild-card spot while the Los Angeles Dodgers run away with the National League West. The Rockies have lost five in a row -- and 10 of 14 -- and will be looking for their four All-Stars at the top of their batting order to deliver some fireworks in the final game before the All-Star break. Charlie Blackmon, Trevor Story, Nolan Arenado and David Dahl are 4-for-28 (.143) with 12 strikeouts in the series.Arizona has held Colorado to two runs in the first two games of the series."You hold down a pretty good offensive team for another night, you know you are doing a lot on the mound," Lovullo said.Colorado will counter Sunday with right-hander German Marquez (8-3, 4.38). He is 4-2 with a 3.06 ERA on the road.He gave up five runs in six innings to the visiting Diamondbacks while getting a no-decision in a May 5 start at Coors Field. Marquez is 3-4 with a 4.42 ERA in 14 career appearances (13 starts) against Arizona.Marquez has 120 strikeouts and only 27 walks in 121 1/3 innings."He's right there with (Washington's Max) Scherzer and some of the big boys in innings pitched," Rockies manager Bud Black said in the Denver Post. "That tells me he's pitching well enough to get deep into games. And we have seen some outstanding games." Marquez, 24, posted 10.6 strikeouts per nine innings last season, when he was 14-11 with a 3.77 ERA."With German, there is still growth to be had, and his best pitching is still ahead of him," Black said. For Arizona, the story Saturday night was third baseman Jake Lamb, who homered for the first time since June 25, 2018. He entered Saturday with only 41 at-bats since July 26 because of a season-ending rotator cuff injury in 2018 and a quadriceps injury this season. He's a potential middle-of-the-order bat if he finds the power stroke that delivered 30 homers in his All-Star season of 2017."Nice to see him striking the ball extremely well," Lovullo said Saturday night. "It's a matter of time before that sweet swing starts lining things up and he starts impacting games the way he did today." --Field Level Media
