Pitching fuels early success for Orioles, Jays The Baltimore Orioles, who won two of three games from the New York Yankees to open the season, continue their road trip when they meet the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night.The Orioles, who defeated the Yankees 7-5 in a game delayed by more than three hours Sunday, will start David Hess, and the Blue Jays will turn to Sean Reid-Foley in the opener of the three-game series.The Blue Jays' starting rotation did not allow a run in 24 innings in splitting a four-game series against the Detroit Tigers.The rotation has required some adjustments. Trent Thornton allowed two hits and struck out eight over five innings Sunday in a game the Blue Jays lost 4-3 in 11 innings.According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Blue Jays' 24 shutout innings from the rotation to open the season is the fourth-longest streak since the start of the expansion era in 1961. The 1963 Cardinals pitched 32 scoreless to start the season, the 1976 Milwaukee Brewers had a 31 2/3-innings streak and the 1994 Atlanta Braves had 25."That's the reason we've been in every game -- pitching and defense," first-year Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said. "I feel really good about it. Whenever Detroit scored in that one inning, it was almost like you're feeling, OK, they're due to score. It's tough to keep throwing zeros up there. But they've been outstanding, the entire rotation, and that's really good. We have a chance every day." Clayton Richard was supposed to start Sunday, but he was backed off to Monday. Now the left-hander will be shut down for at least two weeks with a stress reaction in his right knee."It hurts when he lands, so we have to be careful with that," Montoyo said.The Jays acquired Richard from the San Diego Padres this offseason. He was 7-11 with a 5.33 ERA in 27 starts.Reid-Foley will take Richard's place for the Monday start. The right-hander went 2-4 with a 5.13 ERA over seven major league starts last season. He has not faced the Orioles.Hess, who is in his second season, started against the Blue Jays three times last season and was 1-1 with a 0.95 ERA.Blue Jays shortstop Freddy Galvis was a late scratch Sunday because of a sore back. Richard Urena took his place and had three hits, including two doubles. Galvis was able to stretch his consecutive game playing streak to 329 games, however, when he was used a pinch hitter in the 10th inning.While the Blue Jays have an established closer in Ken Giles, the Orioles intend to be flexible with the pitcher they use to close games in the ninth inning.Mike Wright got the call Saturday against the Yankees and earned his first career save."It might change over the course of the year," Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. "I'm not really sure. There might be a guy who steps in who I want to pitch the ninth inning. But as of right now, we're going to piece it together the best way we can."
